dalí atomicus / philippe halsman / 1948 / met exhibition
dalí atomicus (in reference to dalí’s leda atomica featured behind the cats) explores the notion of suspension. interestingly, the composition of the photograph is a result of painstaking repeated staging rather than photo manipulation. wires (which can be seen in this unretouched version) were used to suspend the easel and painting, while the assistant held up the chair featured to the left and the cats and water were thrown into the air. the photograph took 28 attempts.
